For my second release of 2022 I decided to try a new approach and base the compositions on a Victorian cylinder music box. This beautifully crafted rosewood and brass instrument had me fascinated for a while, standing in my studio, inviting to be explored. The tunes it plays are not quite perfect as pins are missing from the drum and teeth have broken off the combs. The ‘airs’ programmed are beautiful but my desire to do something unique got me tinkering with the mechanism. I discovered that all these metal components encased in a wooden box created a whole spectrum of other sounds. These I recorded as small fragments which I further manipulated through various effects into long loops. These loops formed the basis for the tracks with synthesisers, piano, flute and additional field recordings added. This album is a celebration of the remarkable ingenuity and craftsmanship of instrument makers and the inspiration they provide more than 120 years after they created their devices.

I found that the sounds recorded from the music box where harmonically very rich, full of texture, clarity and dynamics. They gave me an entirely new and unfamiliar palate to play and improvise with. Although the tracks are mostly tonal, slow and contemplative, I have added elements of percussion, rhythm and melody.
